NAMES of Rumi, His Father, His Son, and His Teacher

Mevlana Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi
Mevlana (or Mawlana or Mowlana) = Master
Jalal al-Din = Keeper of religion
Muhammad = the Prophet of Islam
Rumi = From the land of the Romans or West; non-native

Bahauddin Valad = Rumi’s father; one of the great Sufi Shakhs in Balkh, Khorasan, Rumi’s birthplace; called the Sultan of Scholars

Sultan Valad = one of Rumi’s sons; established Rumi’s legacy by developing the Mevlevi order of Sufism and formalizing the dance of the whirling dervishes

Shamsuddin (or Shams) = Rumi’s Master Teacher; a wandering Sufi dervish from Tabriz (now in Azerbaijan); his name is Arabic for “sun”
